Registered Vacant buildings

At one point in 2009 there were 2031 registered vacant building in St. Paul and most of them were homes.  In January of 2011 the number dropped to 1459, and lin January of 2012 1344.  This January there are 1361 registered vacant buildings in St. Paul

We don’t know how many vacant houses there are because not all vacant homes have to be registered.  Just because a building is registered does not mean that it is for sale or a foreclosure and I don’t know if there is any limit to how long a registered building can remain vacant and I hope the number doesn’t climb again.

The City of Saint Paul has ordinances regulating vacant and unoccupied structures. Property owners must register these buildings with the Department of Safety and Inspections if the building is unoccupied and:

Unsecured, or
Secured by other than normal means, or
A dangerous structure, or
Condemned, or
Has multiple housing or Building Code violations, or
Is condemned and illegally occupied, or
Is unoccupied for a period of time longer than one year during which time the Enforcement Officer has issued an order to correct nuisance conditions.

The water and natural gas have to be turned off too.  The home in the picture has been vacant for several years.
