What is walkable?

After doing some research on which neighborhoods are the most walkable I have concluded that my definition of walkable is different than what I am finding on the walk score web site. In general I walk further than the distance that most people consider walkable. My office is about 1.5 miles from my home and it takes around 30 min to walk there.

The nearest mail box is three blocks away and the grocery store is about 10 blocks away. The closest coffee shop and restaurant in about a block and a half away and the dry cleaners is three blocks away.

My neighborhood is considered walkable but does not score as high as it would if we only had to walk one or two blocks for most errands. Yet where I live is a lot more walkable than most of the suburbs and much of the rest of the city where there are areas with a lot of houses and little retail. Walking half a mile isn’t a big deal neither is walking a mile and a half. It just takes a little planning and it means that I don’t need to use a treadmill.

To me it is important to be able to walk places. I don’t think I could live in an area where I could not walk to a park or a coffee shop.

Walking also gives me the opportunity to think and I see things that I would not ordinarily notice.
