Some Houses did not make it

Not all of the homes in St. Paul are surviving the crash of the housing market.  Some are being demolished.

Some are for sale.  In fact there are 39 assorted city lots and pieces of land listed in our MLS and for sale signs around town.  Prices on vacant land start at just under $1000.  I remember when I had the only vacant lot for sale in the city limits and that was in 2006.  Builders had purchased most any piece of land that could be built on.  Buyers were always looking for lots for sale.

These lots will be needed in the future but right now they just sit empty and waiting.  Some of the lots have been annexed by nearby property owners who now have two postage stamp sized city lots to mow and care for.

  1. I owe a house in SW Minneapolis with a very small lot. My wife and I would love to purchase an empty lot that we could use for gardening. Do you know if there are any restrictions for owing vacant lots?

Restrictions vary by city and how the lot is zoned. I know that sounds vague. Some times a property owner can get a variance.

That pictured house at 41 Douglas St. was in my family for 97 years. It was built in 1876 and was purchased by a relative in 1903. My parents purchased it from her in 1935 and continually improved it all their lives. My silbings and I sold it in 2000 after our Mother passed away. The house deterioated afterwards from lack of maintenance. The HRA finally acquired it and tore it down. It had lots of memories and was the end of an era.

I always hate to see a house torn down.
