What is climate gentrification?

I was reading the news and came upon a new term, or maybe it is just a term I am not familiar with. What is “climate gentrification”?  It is like any other kind of gentrification and happens when housing prices go up in an area because wealthier people move to that area. The demand for the area goes up and so do the prices as wealthier people move in and poor people get pushed out.

Climate change will eventually cause people who live in coastal areas to move inland away from rising seas and displace the people who live there now.  Some who live in areas where there isn’t any water will move to wetter places where there are fewer fires, less smoke, and more water. That is all part of climate migration but will also contribute to gentrification in areas that have been less desirable and more affordable.

No one is safe from climate change but the wealthy will have a much better chance of surviving, thriving, and even making money because of climate change.  In fact, some real estate investors are already taking climate change into consideration before they invest.

Look for more climate gentrification in the coming decades as we continue to destroy the planet. It is even possible that people will want to move to Minnesota or maybe not.
