Prairie Phlox

Prairie phlox_wm
Up to 2 feet tall. Leaves opposite, narrow, up to 3 inches long, and tapered to a sharp point. Flowers pink-purple, about 3/4 inch wide, in a loosely branched cluster at the top of the hairy stem. They grow in prairie land and prefer sum Blooms June-July. This plant was found in the river park along Shepard road in St. Paul.

This Minnesota native perennial grows to be about 3 feet tall and blooms in the summer and fall. It prefers sun or part shade; fields, prairies, woods. This one was growing along a fence by the Mississippi River in St. Paul.

Gypsy Flower

These grow in sun to part shade; along roads, waste areas, and fields. They are biennials or short lived perennials and they come from Eurasia.  The flowers are very small. They bloom in the spring and summer, and the blooms are at the top of each stalk.

Yellow Goat's Beard

From a distance the yellow Goat's beard looks like a dandelion. They bloom in the spring and summer and like dry sunny areas. The green bracts that surround the flower are longer than the petals. The flowers open on sunny mornings and close by noon. The closed flowers resemble a thin pod, up to 5 inches long.  They are not native to the area, they come from Europe and are biennial.

The flowers on this plant are very tiny and they are a kind of yellow green.  They grow in the woods and they bloom in the spring. Easy to miss when hiking through the woods so look down. They are about 1/2 inch across and have 6 petals.They are native to Minnesota.

These delicate little flowers grown in drier areas of the woods in clumps. They bloom in the spring but not for long. They are small these plants were about six inches high.

The yellow violet blooms in the spring and can be found along the edge of wooded areas growning in the sunshine. It is a native species.

These are easy to find. They bloom in the spring and after they bloom they have bright red berries on them. They can be found in dry sunny areas at the edge of the woods. They are perennial's and are native to Minnesota

Showy Lady's-Slipper

The showy lady's slipper became the state flower of Minnesota in 1902, and it became protected by state law in 1925. It is illegal to pick or uproot a showy lady slipper flower in Minnesota. This rare plant has vanished from much of its historical range due to habitat loss.
Found in damp woods, bogs, and swamps, the orchid can take 16 years to grow and bloom for the first time. The plants can live for 50 years, and tend to flower in late June and early July, they are a member of the Orchid family.

This native plant is considered a weed and most people would not bother taking a picture. They grow in dry to moderately moist soils. Prairies, fields, open woods, river bottoms, waste places.
Flower Color ranges from pink to purple and they bloom from July to October.

Gray-Headed Coneflower

Perennial, native plant that blooms in the summer, in dry sunny areas on prairies and along roads. Can be found throughout Minnesota but is the most common in the southern half of the state.  These were by a fence at the Fort Snelling State park.

Heath Aster

Blooms in the Autumn, grows in patches, likes dry prairies and other open places. Found in the southern and western parts of Minnesota. These were growing in my yard in St. Paul.  Also called "frost weed" aster.

Shrubby Cinquefoil

Grows mostly in northern Minnesota, along the north shore of lake superior.  They bloom during the summer and the plants can be up to three feet tall.

Harbell

This is my favorite Minnesota wildflower. They look delicate but they will even grown between the rocks along the northshore of lake Superior.  Native perennial widespread in northern forests in rocky dry habitats and under conifers.  They grow in most of the state except the far south. They bloom throught the summer.
