Repurposed packaging – gardeners best friend

It is Friday and Fridays are for fun.

During the winter I collect used packaging. Egg cartons, mini-muffin packaging, and a few sour cream and empty ricotta containers.  Instead of buying fancy plastic stuff at the garden store to use for starting garden plants indoors, I use discarded food packaging.

My marigolds are growing in the packaging for a dozen mini muffins and last week I planted some Nasturtium in a styrofoam egg carton.  Egg cartons have many uses. They are a great way to store small delicate Christmas ornaments too.

Some of the plants will be moved into larger containers. It takes several months to accumulate enough containers. When I am done with them most will be recycled.

When I plant the seeds I close the lid and cover them until they sprout. When I use egg cartons I usually cover them with clear plastic wrap until they sprout. I’ll be starting some tomatoes and cucumbers in about a week.

In a couple of months, I’ll be able to bring my plants outside and watch them bloom.
