Outdoor Baseball

Target-field

Minneapolis isn't very far from Saint Paul. Outsiders think the Mississippi River separates the Twin Cities, but that's only the case in the southern portions of both cities. Minneapolis often drapes across the river, pressing right up against Hwy 280, beckoning us Saint Paulites to enjoy its spoils with the promise of urban glory that our small-town minds can barely comprehend.

It wooed me across the chasm yesterday with good seats at the new Minnesota Twins ballpark, Target Field. Definitely woo worthy.

After three visits, I still have yet to see a complete game there. But I'm not complaining, because I like experiences as much as I like baseball. I particularly like experiences at outdoor baseball facilities, and you should, too.

Our own Saint Paul Saints have been playing a wonderful blend of outdoor ball for years at a goofy little place called Midway Stadium. The mythology and character of the Saints has evolved over the years to incorporate its residents and surroundings. There is evidence that this will happen at Target Field.

Notably, there is a water tower digital art piece visible in center field, a hawk that has been seen sitting atop the right field foul pole (@TargetFieldHawk), and as of last night, a squirrel (@TwinsSquirrel) that doesn't mind wandering into the field of play.

It rained a lot last night, so Twitter on my iPhone came in handy as we waited for the inevitable. Here is a fun little summary of the "action" in a 0-0 game that was officially suspended in the top of the 6th inning.

@MinnesotaTwins Brendan Harris just jumped like little girl when that squirrel ran under his feet. Hilarious

@JoeCStrib First rain delay in Target Field history. Started at 8:32 p.m.

@MinnesotaTwins Game has been suspended.

@gsax I went to a Twins / Yankees game in MN and it rained and it got delayed and it got suspended and I kind of loved it.

@MinnesotaTwins This is new for all of us and we all have to get used to these kinds of situations.

@dbrauer The world will explode if @robynempls narrates a @TwinsSquirrel story on @Myfox9.
