Island Station did not turn out as planned.  Located on the Mississippi River, a few miles West of downtown St. Paul.  The coal burning power station was built in the 1920’s, by St. Paul Gas and Electric but before construction was even finished the plant was obsolete.

It came online in the mid 1920’s, and operated until the 1940’s.   In 1943 it went off peak use and in 1975  it was decommissioned by NSP.  During the 80’s the building was housing with rental units for artists.  In 2003 the plant was sold to a developer who planned to turn it into condo’s complete with boat slips.  That didn’t work out too well.

Today it sits empty with most of the windows broken.  Anyone interested?

Well the history of the building will may turn off the interest of the investor but if one manages it in a proper way then it will definitely gonna good deal.

  2. Teresa; should we buy this and open a Dairy Queen with a “boat through”? just a thought….or not…

  3. Brian – what a lovely idea. We would have so much fun! Can’t think of anything better than ice cream and boats. In the winter we could just kind of hang out. Does Jackie know about this?

Larry – Looks like you are back to bug me. I suppose maybe a ghost lives there.

  4. or maybe we should all pitch in and try to turn it into a co-op market, where the catch of the day is always CARP!!!!

  5. Andrea – maybe we could buy it and split it. part hair care and part real estate. 🙂

  6. I just came across copies of my $1500 deposit for a loft and a boat slip at Island Station. It was November, 2004 and the dream was still alive. Guess we should have invested in _________(fill in the blank)
