For sale sign doesn’t mean trespassing is allowed

We keep running into this problem. Earlier this year it was some folks that live out in the sticks getting sick of people driving down their private driveway at night or walking around in their yard.

More recently someone just walked around one of our listings and tried to peak in the windows. Eventually the owner came out. No that isn’t alright.

A for sale sign is not the same as a “welcome trespassers” sign. Private property does not stop being private property just because it is for sale.

For sale signs almost always have phone numbers on them. If the home is listed by Boardman Realty call the number on the sign. Someone will answer or promptly return your call if we can not answer right away. Call your own agent. He/she would be happy to show you any home for sale.

I know that people call the numbers on the sign and do not get a response. That is unfortunate but it still doesn’t make it OK to walk onto private property and have a look or to knock on the front door.

If the sign in front says “for sale by owner”then it is probably OK to knock on the door but it still isn’t OK to have a look around with out the owners permission.

Keep in mind that the sellers may not be open to having a showing any time without warning or notice. The polite thing to do is to give the seller some notice that you would like to see their home.
