Lilydale regional Park

 Lilydale regional park is on the south side of the Mississippi River near Harriet Island regional park.  Lildale used to be a little town but it kept getting flooded and so does the park.

They have been working on the park all summer and it was supposed to be done last August.  Last week I rode my bike on some of the newly completed but still closed bike trails.  I have to say I love the new trails but what used to be a wild area is now looking a little too tame and seems to be missing a lot of trees.

There are still woods and of course the remains of the old brick plant.  there are still turkeys and deer in the woods and wildflowers too. There are just less woods and more road. 🙁   I still love the Lilydale area and will try to get more photos when the new trails officially open.

After going on last weeks St. Paul Classic bike ride which was on city streets I can tell you that the bike paths in the park are in much better shape than out city streets.

Morgan Trail

On the 4th of July I biked from downtown St. Paul to Minnehaha park in Minneapolis.  One of my favorite bike rides because of the river and the view of Fort Snelling at the overlook and the lock and dam by the old Ford Plant and of course Minnehaha falls.

As I went along the path I ended up giving people directions and kind of acting as a tour guide.  

  • No Minneapolis isn’t far from St. Paul

  • Sure just go over the Ford Bridge and you will be on the Minneapolis side of the Mississippi River.

  • The bike path kind of follows the river

  • Sure you can go to Minnehaha falls and you can’t miss them, take a left at the end of the Ford Bridge.

  • Yes if you take a right at the end of the bridge you will eventually get to the Stone Arch Bridge.

I love biking on the 4th of July.  I like seeing St. Paulites out and about and doing touristy things.  If you want to bike the trails along the river you will find these little informational stations with maps that show the major landmarks.  Enjoy!

I really miss my bike and can not wait to hit the trails.  

The Twin Cities nonprofit Transit for Livable Communities biking and walking are on the rise in the twin cities.  Biking has increased by 50% in the last five years and walking by 20%.  [see MPR news story

St. Paul by bike

 Here are some of the sites from a recent bike ride.  I took the Samuel Morgan trail from UpperLanding Park to the Bruce Vento trail.  I crossed Warner road on the footbridge and went through Indian Mounds Park to get onto the Bruce Vento Trail.  I went a little over 11 miles and it took more than an hour and a half because I stopped to take pictures along the way.

The second picture was taken from the Bruce vento trail.  There are acres of parkland along the trail that has been converted to nature preserve.  It is beautiful but you can’t see much of it from your car. 

Bike Rack Rules

Even though St. Paul is bike friendly with miles of trails and bike lanes parking a bike can be a challenge.  In parts of St. Paul there are few bike racks.  We use trees, benches and fences and anything else we can lock our bikes to.  There are fences with signs that say don’t even think about locking your bike to this fence.  

In the last week the city of St. Paul put a bunch of bike racks in along West 7th street.  When I questioned the placement of the bike racks I was told that they could only be put in certain places because of city ordinances.  It worked out so that most of the bike ranks ended up in front of businesses that do not get bike traffic.

This one is in front of the laundromat and for some reason people do not bike to it.  I am sure with the right type of carrier a few loads of laundry would fit on a bike.

I have never seen anyone bike to the tattoo shop which is located in between and auto body shop and an ambulance garage.  I have never seen anyone bike to the body shop.  There are no other businesses on the block but there is a cafe with out a bike rack across the street where it would get used.  This one will never get used.

This is in front of the Day-by-Day cafe on west 7th.  The cafe gets bike traffic and there isn’t any place behind it of near it to lock up a bike so people lock them to this bench.  There is one small bike rack on this block but there is also a coffee shop and two other retail businesses and little parking of any kind during business hours. 

If bike racks can not be put where they are needed we should not put them in or . . oh my this is outside the box . . . we should change the rules or get a different kind of bike rack so they can be placed where they are needed.  I know that is a stupid idea and when I mention it I hear the four letter word that I hate more than any other . . “can’t”
