Art and Alcohol

art

The new mural on the liquor barrel on the corner of West 7th Street and St. Clair Avenue. The piece was done by the artists at the Schmidt Artists lofts on West 7th West of St. Clair. This sums up the area as a place where art and alcohol have always mixed well and continue to be a theme in the neighborhood.  . . I need to get a better picture it really is a stunning mural.

Northern Spark is Tonight!

Northern Spark art festival starts at 8:58 PM and goes until 5:30 AM on Sunday.  I have been looking forward to this event for months.  This years event is going to be in the Lowertown neighborhood of downtown St. Paul.

I went in 2011 and had a wonderful time.  Much of this years event will be in and around the newly renovated union depot.  There will be various art project in the form of music, poetry, lights, sculpture, dance and who knows what else.   Use the Northern Sparks, web site to get some ideas about what you want to see or just show up and wander around.  There are also mobile apps for Android or iPhone that might be useful.

Produce painting bu Nance Derby Davidson

I am not sure if mural is the right word but local artist Nancy Derby Davidson created a painting for the sign on Cooper’s Foods on W. 7th street near St. Clair Avenue.  The outside of the store and the entry was inside the store have been repainted to coordinate with the sign.

It all looks wonderful and there was a kind of grand opening thing on Saturday.  Dave Thune from the St. Paul city council showed up as did former mayor George Latimer.

For many of us the store has been our source of food for decades.  It is very much a neighborhood store and sometimes a place to catch up on the local gossip.  I guess it is more like a neighborhood institution.

St. Paul Art Crawl & Minneapolis St. Paul Home tour

Two events one weekend. Take a tour of real homes, real people, real ideas Saturday, April 28 & Sunday, April 29, 2012 to find examples and get ideas by touring 60 homes on the 2012 Minneapolis St. Paul Home tour.  These are not Realtor type open houses that are for sale but a chance to look at what our neighbors have done with their homes. The tour is from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday.

It is St. Paul Art crawl weekend.   Noon to 8:00 PM today and Noon to 5:00 PM on Sunday.   Much of the event is in downtown St. Paul and you can go to the lowertown area near the Farmers market and kind of follow the balloons and banners.  There are events outside of downtown too.  The details and maps are on the Art Crawl site.  It is a unique and fun event.
