A warm December

It is Friday and Fridays are for fun. Yesterday when I was outside grilling I noticed that the lilac bushes have buds on them. They are getting leaves. They may bloom by Christmas. Freaky weather for sure.  2023 has been the warmest year on record. It will be interesting to see what 2024 will bring.

I learned something this week

ToolsIt is Friday and Fridays are for fun. This week I learned how to use a cordless drill. I know it doesn’t sound like much but it is. I watched a YouTube video and learned how to insert the drill bit and how to choose the right size bit. I experimented on a piece of scrap wood.

This has been a year of learning for me. I have completed several household maintenance, improvement, and repair tasks. So far I haven’t broken anything or hurt myself. The videos I find online have been a great help. Sometimes I need to look at a few of them.

There are many things we can learn by watching videos and by reading books and instructions.

My next project is a new light fixture for the back porch.

Rice Park is festive

It is Friday and Fridays are for fun. I missed the tree lighting in Rice Park this year but managed to get a picture of the tree.

I have hundreds of pictures of Rice Park during the holidays. I recommend visiting the park after the sun goes down which is late afternoon these days. I like to go during the early morning hours on Sunday because that is the perfect time to take pictures.

It is Friday and Fridays are for fun. It is also Black Friday which is for shopping because capitalist Santa says so. I don’t shop on Black Friday, in fact, I probably won’t leave the house unless I go for a walk.

I am doing my part to help stop or slow inflation and I am doing my best to help the planet. Christmas isn’t sustainable.

Stay home, make something, create something, and have fun.

Everyday I talk to the chickens

It is Friday and Fridays are for fun. Some chickens live nearby. I visit them almost every day. I have named them all and I like to talk to them. There is something about chickens. They listen and look like they understand.

I don’t have any chickens of my own. . . . someday . . . maybe

If you are interested in having chickens in St. Paul visit StPaul.gov, and search on chickens. I would include a link with this but they move the pages so often that I would just be adding another dead link to my site.

  • Roosters are prohibited
  • Residents may not own more than 15 birds at a time

There is an application process and a permit is required and of course a fee. The fees are less than $50 . . at least for now.

It is Friday and Fridays are for fun. I remember a story about a woman who would buy stuff because it was on sale or because she had a coupon. It was all about the lower price not about what she needed.  That is kind of what Christmas is all about.

Buying stuff and sales. Most of what is purchased isn’t needed and much of it isn’t wanted. Christmas isn’t sustainable but capitalist Santa always encourages us to spend, and he is everywhere.

People save up to spend over the holidays or use credit cards to pay for it. Capitalist Santa is a monster. Don’t forget that he created the “scrooge” character to disparage anyone who doesn’t follow his teachings.

This year you can give a gift to the planet. Buy nothing for Christmas as a gift to all life on planet Earth.
