Having a staycation?

This is my busiest time of the year so a vacation is out of the question and even if I did have the energy to go some place Minnesota gasoline prices would stop me.  It is interesting the way there is a “reason” for sky high fuel prices just in time for Memorial day. I won’t work all weekend and there are plenty of things to do around town this holiday weekend.

The Saint Paul Spot  web site has events and they have an mobile app.

There are also fun things to do any weekend like go to the Farmer’s market or bike along the river or around a lake.

Staying in town and spending money at local neighborhood businesses is good for all of us. There are antique shops and coffee shops and garden shops too. Perhaps it would be a good weekend to shop for a good rain jacket, umbrellas and rain boots.

Don’t for get about the Science Museum of Minnesota or Como Park. Both are fun places to take children if you have some.

Have a great weekend. I’ll return on Tuesday with our regular program.

What to do and where to go

This weekend will be a little warmer than last weekend but not quite as exciting. . .unless of course you are into watching rodents to see if they can see their own shadow.  Wheeeeee ground hog’s day!

Last Weekend – 2013 Red Bull Crashed Ice

There are plenty of things to do and places to go.  Hibernating during the winter isn’t a good thing.  It is still Saint Paul Winter Carnival time and the torchlight parade is this evening at 5:30 in downtown St. Paul.

If you don’t love a parade there is still plenty to do.  Go to the St. Paul spot web site for details or download the mobile app to find events nearby or across town.

New Mural

Produce painting bu Nance Derby Davidson

I am not sure if mural is the right word but local artist Nancy Derby Davidson created a painting for the sign on Cooper’s Foods on W. 7th street near St. Clair Avenue.  The outside of the store and the entry was inside the store have been repainted to coordinate with the sign.

It all looks wonderful and there was a kind of grand opening thing on Saturday.  Dave Thune from the St. Paul city council showed up as did former mayor George Latimer.

For many of us the store has been our source of food for decades.  It is very much a neighborhood store and sometimes a place to catch up on the local gossip.  I guess it is more like a neighborhood institution.

More Cossetta’s to love

I have long been a fan of Cossetta’s on West 7th even before it was on West 7th.  It used to be on the now vacant lot along Chestnut street.  It was a across the street from a plastics factory that was where the Science Museum is.

I digress . .

The new much bigger Cossetta’s with lots of parking.  Not quite finished but open for business.  When it is done it will have a bigger market, some roof top seating and more bar stools.  Did you know that there are more bar stools on west 7th street than anywhere else in town?

The difference is Night and day!  I love the way they kept the original store front.  I have often said that Cossetta’s market is one of the top ten  reasons for living in the upper landing neighborhood.

LRT Construction update – University avenue

I took a drive/walk along university early yesterday morning when no one was looking.   It looks like some of the businesses are surviving light rail construction and there are a couple of new chain type fast food places wedged in between the wonderful asian restaurants.  There are some vacant store fronts along University avenue where construction killed some of the businesses that were spared by the great recession.

When my mother was in college she took a train down the very same street but back then they called the trains street cars.  The tracks were torn out long ago in the name of progress.  Back then progress was buses.  Now progress is trains so they are putting the track back onto University. People ask me if the light rail will have an impact on local housing.  Yes it will.  The rail line has created construction jobs already and there are some apartments on the rail line that will also benefit.

The street improvements and stations look wonderful.
