I wrote a post about this a couple of years ago about what for many years has been a derelict structure on the Mississippi River, in the river park. The elevator and sackhouse are on the national register of historic places and have sat vacant and in ruins until late last summer. It looks wonderful now. I read a few years back that it is being converted in to a restaurant and interpretive center. I looked in the windows and all I could see is one huge empty room. There are some informational type markers just out side of the sack house.
According to the architecutre firm of MS&R, the project is called "City House". I am trying to find out when it will open and have not walked the river path for a couple of weeks to check on it. I don't know anything about the restaurant. This project has been on the boards for a long time and there has been little information about it.Maybe there has been information but it can't easily be found.

Come back and visit during the day. It is interesting to come inside and take a look. The Park Service is in charge of this and they lock it up every night. This is on the historic register because it is the first cooperative grain elevator in the United States. The restaurant idea fell flat but maybe they will reconsider when they see how nice it looks.
Awesome HDR image. Keep up the good posts.
It is locally and regionally significant as reminder of an effort by farmers to gain control of the marketing of their crops. It is going to turn into a restaurant and interpretive center. But it evokes a sense of pride in and belonging to something special and meaningful.Hope it comes true soon. Thanks for sharing!
Judy, I was there during the day when I took the photos, about 11 in the morning. I will try again. I get why it is on the national register but I didn’t like how it looked for so many years. sometimes we save buildings until they fall apart and then tear them down anyway and I was afraid that would happen and am happy to see it all fixed up and looking so wonderful now.
Sorry you missed going inside. I called to try to find out if there are regular hours, but no one seemed to know. It is open right now and every evening they come and lock it up. When you walk inside you just feel like sitting down and having a nice glass of wine while watching the river traffic go by. It just begs for a creative use.
I was too busy to leave my desk most of the day. Maybe I could have gone inside last time I was there I didn’t even check. I am going to swing by on Monday and take a peek and if I get inside I’ll take some photos. I could see the river through the windows.
I look forward to hearing an update on this one. I hope you make it inside and get some photos for us!
The City House is open 7a until 9p everyday as a trail head/info center.
