For the heck of it

Today is the day

April 15th that day we have to file our taxes.  Mine have been done for a couple of weeks but I’ll go down to the central post office and mail them this evening.  Why?  For a couple of reasons.  I always owe taxes it works out that way for most who are self employed.  Some years I do get a refund but I have to put it toward the first quarter taxes and kick in some more.  I always have to pay some thing on April  15th.  There isn’t any point in paying early, and the money is getting interest.

There is another reasons too.  I have already been told that this sounds demented, but I love the circus like atmosphere at the post office on tax day.   Postal employees bring out mails bins and line up long Jackson street and along Kellogg.   Protesters stand on the corner waving signs and yelling.   Some times people dress in costumes.  It really is fun to watch.  Try it this year.

I have never been there at midnight.  I think the latest I have ever dropped off my taxes is 11:00 PM.  I imagine there are people still there at midnight and that the atmosphere is a little more tense.  I think I did mail mine a day late once.  I am still here so the punishment must not be death or life in prison.  I guess no one wants to take that kind of a chance.

  1. Personally I would way rather lay in my bed and watch the circus on my late night news.
