For Home Sellers

Now is the time to winterize

by Teresa Boardman, on 11 October 2007

P1040457 The heating seasons starts in a couple of days.  It is still warm out but soon we will have below freezing weather.  Sorry I had to mention that, I know the truth is hard to handle but heck we are all in this together.

This Spring I toured what was once a beautiful home that is now so full of mold that I suspect the only way to clean it up would be to replace it.  The owners were unable to make their house payments and left in a hurry.

It is unclear if they left the heat off or if the furnace malfunctioned but either way the home sat vacant with no heat, and no one turned the water off.  When the thaw came, the frozen pipes burst. The flood caused the floors to warp and  a heavy mold growth on the soggy walls.

If your home is vacant please winterize it.  It is not all hard to do, turn off the water and drain the pipes and toilets.  If the home is on the market signs will need to be posted indicating that the home has been winterized so that someone does not use the toilet.

Here are some instructions on how to do it yourself, there is a link on the web site to a handyman service that can do it for you:  http://www.workshoponwheels.com/winterize.html

  1. I live next door to a family that their pipes burst. It can be a devastating catastrophe to any one’s home. They had to completely replace most of the flooring in the home. It was an expensive repair.
