Smith Avenue Transit Station. I was worried as I watched them build it. I think it turned out alright. It is hard to get a picture because of the traffic. The first picture was taken on a Saturday and the second on a Sunday.
The Smith Avenue Transit station located on Smith Avenue right off of Kellogg blvd. So close to the Xcel center that Minnesota Wild fans must be noticing the cranes.
The new transit center, has a 600-car public parking ramp and sits on top of a Metro Transit bus layover station. The project was supposed to cost 24 million. I think it is safe to assume that it cost at least that much.
The station takes up about half of the 4 acre city owned Cleveland Circle site. Parking ramps are not the most attractive urban structures and there is only so much that can be done to make it look nice. They kept it simple and that helps.

Did I ever tell you that this project is probably all my fault? I think it is. As far as I know, I was the first to propose this back in 1989. Of course, I had a grander scheme in mind, as is my wont, but all we got was this.
The main idea here is that people come off of the interstate right to a place where they can park. They then become pedestrians, or hop a local bus if they have a little further to go.
Why? Because pedestrians contribute to an active nightlife and spend more money than people in cars. Let’s see how it all works out.
…so, then…does Jesse Ventura ride the bus?

It’s not bad for a parking garage. Though the sculpture in the window is what always grabs my attention. At first I thought it was really cool. But now it lights up. And flashes. And spins. When I’m sitting at the red light on Smith waiting to turn left on Kellogg I can’t take my eyes off it.
It’s funky. But I’m not sure if it’s a good funky.
Kevin – then you have to read my post about how frightening I find the sculpture:
