The cop shop

by Teresa Boardman, on 18 September 2007

CopshopWe have five major police stations in St. Paul or "cop shops" :)   This is the central station located at 367 Grove Street, St. Paul, MN 55101, and is the headquarters for the St. Paul PD.

I had trouble taking the picture because there really isn’t any parking on the streets around the building and for some reason I decided not to do what I usually do which is park where ever I want to.  The signs in the parking lot say "customer parking only"  not sure who their customers are but I am thinking most of the visitors get a ride to the station and the adjacent adult detention center, so they don’t need many parking spots.

When people want to move to St. Paul or any other city they often want to know about crime.  Where there are people there is crime.  I have link on the side column of this blog to the list of Level three sex offenders, I understand that 20 of them live in St. Paul.  In general the twin cities metro area has a low rate of violent crimes.

There are some resources that may be of interest on the St. Paul Police Department web site.  Crime in St. Paul is tracked by grids.  Each grid is just a few blocks, I used to know the number of blocks and can’t find it on the web site.  Crime is tracked in these small areas with weekly reports and yearly summaries.  The reports even show which blocks crimes were committed on.  Crime rates do vary by grid and by block.

We also have an unusual tradition here in St. Paul of publishing pictures of persons who were arrested for prostitution.  The site has been expanded to include persons convicted of indecent conduct in a city park.

The web site and police department also have services for crime victims.

  1. I am shaking my head at myself! I couldn’t help myself and clicked on your link for sex offenders – even though I live in Florida and had NO hope of knowing any of them anyways! I hope that you post encourages some St. Paul citizens to take a look and do whatever possible to protect your young St. Paulians.

PS – I also looked at the Current Indecent Conduct Conviction Photos (rats! no current convicts)

  2. Prostitution is the worlds oldest profession. I could go on about what it does to women etc. I guess U have a problem with the way the web site is handled. Notice it says “arrests” not convictions when it comes to prostitution. What I do like about it is the they put the Johns up on the site too. The nice men that come into our kind of red light district, many from the burbs. Some how there is justice in that. Never thought I would be writing about this on a blog. :) thanks for leaving a comment.

  3. I LOVE that they post the guys too! I was just laughing at my human nature coming out (having to see who was on the list even though I live VERY far away). I enjoy your posts so much – keep up the great work!

  4. Tara – looking at the pictures on the site is almost a sport around here, especially in the winter. :)
