Larry Cragun’s post about community got me thinking, I try not to think to much but sometimes I just can’t help it. The Downtowner is a restaurant, near my home that I go to for meetings, lunches and for breakfast, every Saturday with the family. An easy walk, and half a block from the cyber cafe that I often refer to as my office. I don’t really remember how the oatmeal thing started, but I am relatively sure that Pavel started it. When we are not seated in his section he gets the oatmeal before our server does and decorates it. He may run out of ideas one day who knows.
How is this related to neighborhoods or communities? The point is that if you live in the same place long enough you get to know a lot of people. I know the owners of most of the local restaurants, and shops. If I go for a walk, or to the grocery store or most any where in the neighborhood I will see people that I know.
People move around a lot and by doing so I think they miss out on feeling like a member of a community or a neighborhood. Part of the feeling is being among friends instead of being surrounded by strangers.

What a great story on The hood I live in McGregor Minnesota,2.5 Hours north of the ciries on Big Sandy Lake. I too have the pleasure of being able to say with conviction that I love my Neighborhood. It does not matter what day of the week it is or where you are at. A resort on the lake Tuesday am for coffee, you will for sure run into a warm hand shake a friendly smile asking how you are as well as the kids. I wanted to say its Awesome that you have that in the cities too. Come see us some time up in McGregor on Big Sandy Lake we will show you around http://www.BigSandyLake.com
oatmeal raisin art… what does the one on the top right represent?
Great story.
Rick – I have been there. When it gets above freezing I’ll drive up.
Maureen – Pavel reads this blog and I am afraid you might hurt his feelings. I figured it our right away, it is a computer. Pretty creative if you ask me. The downtowner has wi-fi and I am thinking that it looks a lot like my laptop.
10 years, or thereabouts, is the longest I lived anywhere -Duluth, MN: the Lake, the Downtowner Cafe, Morgan Park, the Pioneer Bar, Superior-just across the bridge.(Although I didn’t know it I had to leave there to meet my wife near Philly.) We moved a lot when I was a kid – the first school I finished out of was college.
I guess community is when strangers with Blackberrys or cell phones with annoying ring tones pay more attention to each other than ring tones.

Steve – this downtowner is in St. Paul. Duluth/Lake Superior is one of my favorite places. My husband and I love to camp on the shore and walk along the beach near two harbors MN. I have never seen an ocean or a lake that is as beautiful as Lake Superior. It is Easter, get off the net and go do some Easter things.
