For Home Sellers, Historic Homes

House History

by Teresa Boardman, on 28 October 2006

HistorycneterPhoto was taken at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul.  Don’t run away, I know it is a museum but I promise if you go there it won’t make you yawn.

I live in a historic home so the research center at in the history museum is my friend.  Several years ago my husband and I researched our home all the way back to 1858.  We know the names of everyone that ever owned it and quite a bit about the families.   We used our abstract to get started and then used census information, reverse phone directories, archived news papers, old insurance maps, pictures and books  found in the research facility at the history center to do the rest.

There is a section on the Minnesota Historical Society web page about how to do a house history.  A great place to start.  In the research center there are handouts on how to use the facility and how to research a house.

When I sell historic homes I often start at the history center.  Buyers, sellers and home owners like to see the information and the old picture.  The Minnesota Historical Society web page is loaded with pictures and information about the history of the twin cities.  Definitely worth a visit. http://www.mnhs.org/index.htm

Great post. Loved reading all your info and getting a feel for the Minnesota area. Too bad I didn’t know you earlier when I needed to refer my sellers to the area.

    Great blog postings!

I love the post. My wife and I are from the other side of the Mississippi but thanks to you, we’ll have to take the journey over to your town this weekend. Our home was built in 1911, near lake Nokomis in Minneapolis and we suspect interesting thing may have occurred over the last 9 decades. We both love history and feel like fools for not utilizing the great resources that we have just a few miles away.

    Thanks for the info.
