The Census Bureau has released the 2005 American Community Survey. This is a five-year update of the regular census. For those of us in select places, like Saint Paul, there is a wealth of information about many things, especially housing. For example:
The median rent in Saint Paul is $732, which is for a one bedroom unit. The median mortgage is $1,361, which is for a house with 2 bedrooms and 5 rooms total.
There are 107,979 total occupied housing units in Saint Paul, of which 63,609 are owner occupied (59%). 7,045 of these housing units are people who have lived there since before 1970. The median year moved into the unit is 2000.
14,407 (13%) of these housing units do not have a vehicle of any kind. The median number of vehicles per household is one.
Median value for owner-occupied units is $200k, with 327 of them worth $1 million or more.
Oh, and as for that non-home related stuff? Well, the median age is 33 years, and we’re 66% white. 34,183 (32%) of all households have at least one person under 18 years old. Median household income is $44,103.
Lastly, I want to highlight the percentage of Renters who pay more than 35% of gross household income in rent as well as the percentage of Owners who pay more than 35% of gross household income in mortgage payments. It’s quite high, and a bit higher than the statewide average:
| Rent | Own | |
| Saint Paul | 48.3% | 40.4% |
| Minneapolis | 50.5% | 36.5% |
| Minnesota | 44.8% | 31.4% |
